Elmira, NY

Elmira, a small city located in Chemung County with the wide and gorgeous Chemung River flowing through it, is an excellent day trip for nature, Victorian history, and small town charm. Elmira is due south of Geneva in the Finger Lakes region, approximately 55 miles away.

ACTIVITIES

Art lovers will rejoice with a visit to the Arnot Art Museum, which opened in 1913. The museum’s permanent collection includes 17th, 18th and 19th century European paintings, and the 19th and 20th century American Art. Its 21st century collection focuses on contemporary representational art.

Take a step back in time with a visit to the Newtown Battlefield State Park, the site of the Battle of Newtown fought on August 1779, during the American Revolutionary War.

Kids will certainly enjoy the National Soaring Museum, an aviation museum whose stated aim is to preserve the history of motor-less flight. The museum features a large collection of vintage and historical gliders.

TWAIN TIME

Elmira is dubbed Mark Twain Country as the American author / novelist / newspaperman Samuel Langhorne Clemens (aka Mark Twain, author of the Adventures of Tom Sawyer) summered and worked din Elmira, where his wife, Olivia Langdon, was born.

Self-guided Mark Twain tours of various sites include the author’s octagonal study on the pristine Victorian-Era grounds of Elmira College on college Avenue. The study was originally located on the property of the family summer home on Quarry Farm on the river. Twain, who died in 1910, is buried in the city’s Woodlawn Cemetery, with his wife and children.
